This route is incredibly varied terrain in a short distance. Red Valley is red rock desert to start, then suddenly the road goes from 70mph straights down to 25mph sharp corners climbing up the mountain (buffalo pass), very scenic mountain road with a few views at the top. Continuing west you drop down the back side of the pass, and right into a Arizona red rock canyon. Fantastic rocks and walls, amazing. If you're in the Four Corners area, I highly recommend this stretch of road. Road surface was very good, no gravel but obviously keep your eyes peeled if it's been raining.
Check weather before going, I rode in September and assume it would be snowed in or closed in the winter.
Beautiful stretch of mountain highway, up over 10k' elevation, so maybe only for spring, summer, early fall? The highway passes through many mountain valleys and by beautiful meadows. it's very scenic through here, my favorite part of US64.
Not for the faint of heart.Awesome views.
Great road passing through the Shiprock formation up close, up and over a very nice typically twisty Buffalo pass, and along the Canyon de Chelly with its great overlooks of the cliff dwellings. Paved all the way!
A really nice way across northern New Mexico, nice straights, good overaking, nice corners and pleasnat backdrops.
Not very many corners, but easy cruising and nice views.
Nice mix of good scenery on the NM side then nice curves on the CO side.
Through the indian reservation, with some turns and many places to gas it.
