A896 / Mountain road : Lochcarron - Applecross

Highland (Scotland) > United Kingdom > Europe
June 20, 2005 - 4 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.3

This is the highest classified road in Britian with spectacular views from the summit. From Lochcarron head west through Kishorn to the junction at Tornapress, turn left and start heading up the hill, dont take the left turn down to the old oil rig construction yard about a mile along the road. The road starts to climb from here for the next 6 miles, its all single track with some nasty blind corners but also some lovely sweepy bends.there is a good spot to stop for pics on a sweeping right hand bend above the oil rig yard with a great view over Loch Kishorn to Plockton and the Skye bridge.continue climbing up to the hairpin bends, can be tricky early in the year because of gravel and muck left on the road after the winter.Stop at the top hairpin and look back down the corrie at the view. Its about another mile to the summit with a big stopping place,if its a clear day the views are fantastic accross the inner sound to Raasay and Rona, south to Rhum and Eigg and all the way north to Lewis. From here on its down hill all the way to Applecross for 6 miles, again watch some of the corners for gravel and one nasty open left hand bend about half way down with an adverse camber which has caught out a few bikers. When you get back down to sea level you can turn left for the Applecross Inn ,good food and biker friendly, there is also a shop and prtrol station or you can go right and take the coast road round to Sheidaig to complete the loop.there are some spectacular views of the Torridon mountains, loch Torridon and loch Sheildaig. The road is quite demanding in places but well worth the efort but try to pick a clear day to take advantage of the fantastic views.

A70 / A721 : Balerno - Carluke ( Lang Whang )

South Scotland > United Kingdom > Europe
October 10, 2008 - 3 star route rating Motorcycle Road3.3

Fed up of taking the M8 (hateful road) between Edinburgh and Glasgow? Try this instead. Carluke to Glasgow is orrible, but the section between Balerno and Carluke makes up for it. Some nice bends as you come out of Balerno, but speed limit stays at 40.

BEWARE: the initial road surface out of Balerno is like a farm track, it is VERY bumpy. It is straight however, so unless youre on a 750 kawasaki you should be ok.

It is mostly straight with one or two corners, but this is not a place for lining up corner after corner.

Where this road scores highly though is the traffic, or rather the lack of it. I once saw a milk lorry on this road. And I once saw a car. One time I saw a gsxr 750. Thats about it. This road is empty.

The scenery isnt bad, mostly open country, so visibility is great, it has the occassional forestry commission forest.

Once you get to Carluke though the fun is over. Traffic becomes heavy, speed limit is mostly 50 to Glasgow, scenery is dreadful, and youll have to use a section of the M8 (spit) if you dont want the journey to take 2 hours.

A944 : Aberdeen - Westhill - Alford - Lumsden

North East Scotland > United Kingdom > Europe
January 13, 2008 - 4 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.0

The best part of this starts sust outside Alford, turn right and over the bridge heading for Strathdon. The road follows the River Don through a refreshing forest with plenty of sweepers. After about 8 miles, theres a turn off for Strathdon, dont take it - go straight through to Lumsden. 3 miles past Lumsden, after a series of good turns, you cross over a bridge and go left on this paved single track.

The track quickly winds past a farm (go slow), then opens into some isolated and beautiful countryside. The track T-junctions with the A941, turn left and enjoy an ever changing bit of scenery as it flows through 12 miles of heather, forest, streams, with mountains on either side.

The road T-junctions just below Dufftown, turn left and ride it the town. The next part can be combined with the A941.

A93 : Blairgowrie - Ballater (Glenshee and Royal deeside)

North East Scotland > United Kingdom > Europe
January 20, 2005 - 5 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.6

Great biking road which takes you from Blairgowrie over Glenshee and into Royal Deeside. Braemar is a good stopping off point en route. For those who don't want to return via the same route (I think the return journey is even better), the B976/B974 road from Ballater to Fettercairn can be taken which will take you back to Blairgowrie via Kirriemuir.
