Perhkopi - Kukes

Albania > Albania > Europe
August 18, 2012 - 3 star route rating Motorcycle Road3.5

great scenery road, distance is appr 100km but it takes around 3 hours. remore villages, high elevation roads, mainly no facilities and BE VERY VIGILAND, the road eventhough mainly in good condition can hide many holes and other features that can harm you & bike. as you leave from Peshkopi, in a few kms there is a right turn, that road is new and well surfaced but with surprices as well. cannot give you better directions because there are almsot non road signs, by asking people you get directions. elevation can reach just above 2000m. basic accommodation and facilties (even hospital) you can find in Kukes.

DN7C / Transfagarasan Pass : Cârtisoara - Curtea de Arges

Transylvania > Romania > Europe
September 1, 2010 - 4 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.5

The Transfăgărăşan (trans (over, across) + Făgăraş) or DN7C is the highest (~2200m) and most dramatic paved road in Romania. Built as a strategic military route by Nicolae Ceauşescu, the 110 km of twists and turns run North to South across the tallest sections of the Carpathian Mountains, between the highest peak in the country, Moldoveanu, and the second highest, Negoiu. The road connects the historic regions of Transylvania and Wallachia, and the cities of Sibiu and Piteşti.

Moldova - Maramures region

Transylvania > Romania > Europe
June 17, 2012 - 4 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.0

A magnificent mountainous, until Vatra Dornei the road condition is perfect giving high speeds with lots of open corners enjoying the same time the great scenery. From Vatra Dornei towards Borsa (45km appr) the road is really terrible with lots of holes and dangerous spots, be vigiland, but the scenery is amazing (altitude appr 1400m, Tihuta pass). The Maramures region is a UNESCO protected region due to the traditional wooden churches which can be found mainly after Borsa towards Sighetu Marmatiei.

DN67C : Transalpina ( Novaci - Ranca - Obarsia Lotrului - Sugag - Sebes )

Transylvania > Romania > Europe
July 17, 2011 - 4 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.5

DN67C is No. 2 Romanian biking road in terms of both scenery and turns (Transfagarasan (DN7C) is still number one). Spectacular high alpine view ("trans" = crossing the). Newly asphalted road, about 5 km. are still waiting to be asphalted in summer of 2011, but no problem even now, as the road is already prepared. Check for availability, it should be opened from June 1. You may find accommodation in Ranca (relatively new ski resort). There is an alternative, from Sugag - Dobra - Jina - Saliste - Sibiu, which is more atractive from scenery point of view and it will be more attractive also for corners, once the road is finished (curently prepared to be asphalted). Near Novaci you may want to visit "Polovragi" cave - in the village with the same name or "Muierii" (that is Women's) cave.

Eger round trip via Gyöngyös

Eastern Hungary - Nógrá... > Hungary > Europe
March 3, 2011 - 4 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.0

A journey of about 100kms starting and finishing in Eger. From the main road number 25 that runs through Eger take the turn for Sirok (road number 24). After a few hundred metres you are out of town and hitting open countryside. Not much in the way of straights but plenty of bends. The next village is Egerbakta. This is where things get interesting as when you leave here you start climbing through the forest with some good twisties both up and downhill. When you reach Sirok follow the signs for the castle (to the right from the centre of the village). From the castle you have amazing 360* views of the Matra and Bukk mountains and the Tatras in Slovakia. Return to rod number 24 and continue on through Resck and Parad. The road here is very flat but again very twisty. In Paradsasvar the road takes a sharp turn to the left and you are once again climbing through the forest on a really fun twisty road, very popular with bikers in the summer. Once at the top in Matrahaza) there is a large car park to the right with several huts selling trinkets and food/drinks, a great place fro a brief stop. From here there is a road to the left which takes you to Kékestetó, the highest point in Hungary. There is a tall tower which can be accessed to give fantastic views all around. Back to road number 24 and continue along, you'll be heading down for several kms with many more bends into Gyöngyös. At the very end of the road you reach road number 3. Turn left here and head in the direction of Eger. After about 3kms there is a small turning to the left signed "Abasar". Take this road and stay on it. This is a flatter, but not flat road running along the foot of the Matra mountains heading through Abasar,Markaz, Domozlo, Kisnana and into Verpelet. All very traditional Hungarian villages. In Veprelet there is a turning to the left signed "Eger", take this road, a mix of up and downhill, straights and bends, through Egerszalok and back to the main road number 25 in Eger about 1 1/2 kms from your start point. Please note that the speed limit is 50kph in towns and villages and 90kph out of town. The drink drive limit is ZERO!! There are very few Police around but there are a couple of bike cops that ride between Eger and Kekes during the summer. There are NO fixed speed cameras but very occasionally there is an unmarked car with speed gun near Eger but I've only seen this a handful of times in 3 years.

Nicosia - Pirgos

Cyprus > Cyprus > Europe
January 10, 2008 - 5 star route rating Motorcycle Road5.0

Use: Road Bike
Take A9 motorway heading to Troodos mountains and then continue with B9. Then turn right for road E908 towards Kykkos monastery (brown sign for historic and archaeological places). Continue and then after 8km app., at your right, the sign says K. Pirgos (or Pyrgos). From here you will start a windy road through the mountains. Scenery will be great as you continue ascending the mountain range with views from western seaside of the island and many more. As you keep riding the scenery gets even better and better, many kinds of scenery for the eyes to observe and stay satisfied with the road surface getting better as well. Bends are getting more as well so the fast one will enjoy “playing” scratching Kevlar and the touristic rider will love the views. Reaching the remote small town of Pirgos (Kato and Pano which means the lower and upper) turn left and have a stop at the small Cypriot village style of restaurant completely at the beach front at the village Mansoura, on your right side. This route is continuity with route 7, Paphos - Polis.
The best time for the route is mostly winter and spring but be careful of falling rocks and icing, especially in bends which the sun cannot reach. The route is a must, really beautiful scenery combining mountains routes with costal sea view. Riding time can be from 2 hours for the fast ones and up to 3 hours for those having lost of stops for photo taking which you will find lots especially the seasons mentioned.
The last 20-30km to Pirgos the road is newly surfaced so enjoyment is fully achieve but also take care that you have to fill tanks either in B9 because afterwards you will find only at destination.
Another alternate is as you turn right for Pirgos from E908, in-between the route you will observe signs for Kampos, follow the route for Kampos and then continue for Stavros tis Psokas destination (ask for information). From here is partly route 2, reaching Stavros tis Psokas you can continue towards Pirgos.

Notes: after B9 you have to deviate to find gas station/be careful of icing and falling rocks/recommended for winter-spring season/the only mid point when up in the heart of the mountains is the village Kampos which you will see signs for it

B107 / Großglockner Hochalpenstraße / Hochtor : Bruck An Der Grossglocknerstrasse - Winklern

Western Austria > Austria > Europe
January 23, 2005 - 5 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.6

Fantastic scenery, and the highest pass in Austria. Open May to November. Can be busy - so probably best to avoid at weekends. Very popular with bikers, but cars too. You need a head for heights and have to like hairpins too. Some nice fast stretches too. Very few hazards except the road itself: the 29 hairpin bends. Visibility is good though, and there are hardly any side roads. Jusat watch out for people gawping at the scenery. 360 views from the Edelweissspitze - stop for food and a beer there as well. It is a toll road though. Euro 17 for a day/ Euro 30 for a 30 day pass. Their stated aim is to be the most biker friendly pass in the Alps! More info here www.grossglockner.at

Ioannina - Zagoria - Prespes lakes

Mainland Greece > Greece > Europe
December 1, 2006 - 5 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.8

Use: All bikes
Make the route as exactly as described, don't miss anything. At Ioannina take road E90 and very shortly you will enter the Zagoria area. Kipi, Elati, Papingo, Vikos are some of the special and picturesque villages of the area which you must visit. The route is fantastic with lots of old bridges worth many photos and nature at its best with the high mountain range of Pindos mountains giving extra satisfaction to your eyes. Then continue E90 all the way to Kastoria, a great route with lots of picturesque scenery and places, take lots of breaks to enjoy nature. The road is well paved passing from fantastic locations. Also here is the Vikos gorge, 16km long, many hours of walking but fantastic nature. Kastoria, I believe is the prettiest town of Greece, the houses are like the old aristocrat ones, the whole town is magnificent and famous for furs manufacturing. An overnight is a must here so able to enjoy it. The next day take road 15 towards the lakes of Prespa, very nice route and the lakes are hiding lots of features for the curious one, just explore it but be careful for bad people here and never stop for a help to anyone except that you are sure they're a tourist.
After visiting Prespes lakes then set heading to Florina on road E86, very nice route through mountainous thick forest road.
Notes: fill tanks often / don't stop to help anyone on this route, you may be hurt or even killed.

November 14, 2006 - 4 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.0

Kalamata, famous for the best olives found in Greece and Mediterranean sea is the starting point towards the famous as well Mani region. The route gets seaside at Kardamili village, give some extra time and visit the old village by turning right and diverting a bit. The route continues through seaside scenery and after Areopoli you will reach Diros sea caves, a nice interesting place to visit but take care that the whole boat tour takes a few hours. From Areopoli and further south is the Mani region. The unique characteristic of the area are the houses which are built like small castles to prevent raids and also the plant less wild mountains which are following the route. Continue up to the end, cape Tenaro and return back through the eastern side of the peninsula.
A unique route and a must to the bike traveler in Greece.

Continue riding on the coastal road of Argolikos bay heading south and follow the route up to Leonidio. After Leonidio a windy road with low vegetation is giving to the rider a great feeling and views especially during winter with the river aside of the route running. The road ascends to the Parnonas mountain range and a stop is a must at the village of Kosmas. Park the bike below the huge tree lying in the centre of the village's plateau and from here there is a road sign towards the villages of Vambakou, Varvitsa, Vresthena and Karies. It's a beautiful forest road with great riding features (on/off bikes only),take this diversion if you are interested of remote and tiny country side roads.
The route continues through the beautiful Parnonas and the descending soon is starting giving nice views of the Lakonikos bay. Githio is a very small but picturesque town surrounded by the Greek kind of scenery and I must say that Githio is a must for the traveler (I am in love with the whole area). Githio can be the base and you can have many daily trips around the area. Also, there is a ferryboat for the islands of Kithira (4 hours) and Crete (8 hours).
