The Transfăgărăşan (trans (over, across) + Făgăraş) or DN7C is the highest (~2200m) and most dramatic paved road in Romania. Built as a strategic military route by Nicolae Ceauşescu, the 110 km of twists and turns run North to South across the tallest sections of the Carpathian Mountains, between the highest peak in the country, Moldoveanu, and the second highest, Negoiu. The road connects the historic regions of Transylvania and Wallachia, and the cities of Sibiu and Piteşti.
Now that this route is completely sealed it has to be a \"must do\" for the more adventurous and competent motorcyclist. The Whanganui River valley is spectacular and has a lot of history associated with it. Finish the ride down through the Parapara's and you will have had a great day! Warnings: Cellphone access is very limited and fuel only obtainable in Wanganui and Raetihi!
A very good ride but remember it is along rural roads and be aware of the possibility of other traffic, particularly trucks, using it. Enjoy!
