S7 from Potenza to Matera, via Tricarico and Grassana. It follows the Roman Appian Way. One of the most enjoyable and scenic routes in the area. Its a bit difficult to find coming out of Potenza so take the main autovia the 407 and then follow signs for Tricorico. Matera is a very attractive town and well worth a visit.
Highway 299 is a great ride. To make it even better, join it up with Highway 36 to gie a good circular day out of just over 300 miles.
Deal's Gap is THE twistiest road in the Southeastern US. Their claim to fame is, "311 curves in 11 miles". It is a constant playground for bikers of all kinds complete with a biker-friendly campground at the North Carolina starting point. A variety of hairpin turns will keep any motorcyclist's eyes wide open. People from all over North America come here just to ride "The Dragon". Recently though, it has become so popular that the police presence is heavy. Be sure not to cross the yellow line and they'll leave you alone. The cops are around most heavily on the weekends as there are hundreds of motorcycles that come through. Not only is "The Dragon" worth riding, ANY road you pick in this area will be beautiful with long sweeping curves and breathtaking views.
The lower part of the route is fairly ordinary but the final section is really pretty and great riding. Once you get to Castellina, there are plenty of other enjoyable rides.
This road winds through a spectacular gorge, some fast sweepy sections and a great set of hairpins. watch out for the 'tunnel du tende, a long, dark, narrow and bumpy tunnel with artics coming down the middle of the road at you. Apart from that, a blinder of a road and a great way to get to the Med, or even better, turn off at Breil and take the D2204 to Sospel and Nice.
