Pragelpass : Hinterthal - Glarus ( Emerald Lakes and Waterfalls )

Switzerland > Switzerland > Europe
February 5, 2006 - 4 star route rating Motorcycle Road3.7

This route runs approximately parallel and to the north of the Klausenpass. It would be a nice return trip back to Glarus or Schwyz if you took the Klausenpass one direction and this trip in the opposite direction. This is a very narrow road in the section through the mountains. To get to the beginning of this road, take the Bahnhofstrasse east out of Schwyz, left on Scheidgasse, right on Strehlgasse, then the road turns in a U-turn and becomes Grundstrasse. If you follow Grundstrasse for about 10 km, you find it turns into Kustnau, and then Hauptstrasse as it enters Hinterthal. At the east end of Hinterthal, jump over the bridge onto Pragelstrasse, and follow this road for about 30 km. At some points, this road goes down to one lane, and I have heard that the pass closes on the weekend except to bicycles and foot traffic. HOWEVER. If you can manage to navigate this road, there is a spectacular lake called the Klontalersee towards the Glarus end of the route. It is an amazing emerald green color with several spectacular falls. At the east end of the lake turn left onto Klontalstasse, or go straight on around the lake. Both roads dump you back down the hill into Glarus. This sia very pleasant ride, best accomplished before dusk and on a sunny day. I have posted photos on my travel log... www.travel-switzerland.net. I did not see any police when I rode this trip, but I recommend caution, as it can be very narrow inplaces with blind turns. Enjoy!

17 / Klausenpass : Glarus - Altdorf (A Ride through the Clouds)

Switzerland > Switzerland > Europe
February 5, 2006 - 5 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.6

Comments: Among my riding experiences in Switzerland, I would rank this route as Number ONE. If you are lucky to have a clear day to ride this route, expect views for miles and miles. The road winds up and up through a long alpine valley with sky-scraping granite peaks, and then back and forth up the valley wall until all the trees are gone. There is a nice spot at the summit to stop for a coffee and the loo. We spotted a cow behind the restaurant gently chewing its cud so as not to disturb the enormous bell hanging around its neck, briefly enjoying a moment of peace. On the way back down towards the east the road is literally carved into a cliff, providing a bit of the \'whoops\' in your belly as you peer over the guardrail. There is an unbelievable waterfall across the valley that drops several hundred meters into the green abyss, rare these days as most are tapped for electric power generation. The trip ends down near the Vierwaldstaettersee in Altdorf, where there is a monument to William Tell. The ride along the lake to Schwyz is amazing follow-on, but I shall describe it in another entry. Although this website does not support photos of the routes, please go to my travel-log, www.travel-switzerland.net and look for the link \'Klausenpass\' to see more info and photos. Be very careful of your speed, particularly on weekends. We passed many a bicyclist grinding up the 8% grade, plus boneheads like me who are constantly pulling over for photos. This is a road where you could tear around the switchbacks, only to find a motorcop with a radar gun sitting there waiting just for you. I know, I followed him for about 15 km. But then I stopped at nearly every place he did because of the spectacular views. (He used them to watch for likely candidates.)

Epsom Road / A246 : Guildford - Leatherhead

From Guildford follow Leatherhead (start on the A25 then the A246) After Merrow, about 2km take right hand lane at the lights on to the A25 to Dorking. The roads rises up towards Newlands corner (nice place to stop for good views), some picturesque Surrey villages (watch your speed) as you leave Dorking take the A24 and at the second roundabout you will find the well known Box Hill car park, a great biker meeting point. Enjoy

Pleasant route with a few good corners. Quite popular with local bikers. Worth giving a try if you are in the area.
