A82 : Crianlarich - Glencoe Village

North East Scotland > United Kingdom > Europe
January 5, 2005 - 4 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.3

Scenery is picture postcard and the best aspect of the route for me, although there are a few straights and a number of nice corners. Road condition is generally pretty good but this can be a busy road, including caravans, being directly on the path to Fort William and other northern delights. I've only seen a minimal police presence myself but have been warned that there are unmarked cars on regular patrol.

B863 : North Ballachulish - Kinlochleven

Highland (Scotland) > United Kingdom > Europe

This road wasn't busy when I rode it and think that's it's normally so. It was a former main road so has a good construction. Some really good corners.

A68 : Crook - Jedburgh - Dalkeith

North East England > United Kingdom > Europe
January 11, 2005 - 3 star route rating Motorcycle Road3.2

Really nice and scenic long section that includes a whole variety of nice corners and straights along its length. The surrounding (mostly a National Park) is really good. As it is a main route, it can have quite heavy traffic.

Barnard Castle - Low Row (Gunnerside)

North East England > United Kingdom > Europe
March 5, 2009 - 3 star route rating Motorcycle Road3.3

This route consists of country roads over open moorland dropping down into deep valleys with the occasional stream to cross (easy, in dry weather), (I have a big trailie but others in our group have sport bikes and tourers all enjoyed the route). It starts in Barnard Castle, head south down the hill and over the river, turn left on b6277, ride to A66 turn right,100mtrs turn left signposted Reeth, over moorland 15kms turn left in Arkengarthdale and right signposted Low Row. Climb again onto Gunnerside Fells, here is where you will find tight bends, a stream or two before dropping down again into Swaledale at Low Row, from here you can turn right (B6270) along to Thwaite and the Buttertubs Pass to Hawes or carry on to Kirkby Lonsdale or turn left to Reeth, Richmond, A1 the choice is yours, enjoy.

B6479 : Settle - Chapel le Dale

Yorkshire > United Kingdom > Europe
November 10, 2007 - 4 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.0

Take the B6479 out of Settle towards Chapel-le-Dale. When the get to the Ribblehead viaduct tuen right on the B6255 to Hawes. This really is a superb stretch of road and one of the finest in the dales. The first half is a rollercoaster of a road with a grat variety of bends. Stop at the midway point to admire the Ribblehead Viaduct - one of the classic views of the Dales. The second half to Hawes is faster and more open. Very popular with bikes in the summer, so watch out for police. An unmarked blue Subaru patrols this area so keep an eye out.

A170 : Thirsk - Helmsley

North East England > United Kingdom > Europe
June 25, 2008 - 3 star route rating Motorcycle Road3.0

On leaving the pretty and bike friendly market town of Thirsk, real life home of James Herriot, the rider has at his grasp good roads at all points of the compass.Select the A170 towards Scarborough, and find yourself in Helmsley in a very short time. This is a good high speed road with smooth sweeping corners,a couple of flat out straights, and a couple of technical sections that require a bit of care. This route has three seperate sections, the first being an uphill part taking us up Sutton bank.Traffic tends to bunch up here as there is a sharp left hand hairpin, and Hgvs tend to bog things down.Up the bank, and watch out for a sharp right hander, with an entrance to a picnic area on the left.Once past this the road opens up into the gloriously fast middle section, corners that you can see through, and generally very well surfaced.A couple of junctions are well signposted but is a good idea to roll off the gas. This brings us to the insane 3.5 km downhill straight, which is as fast as you dare. A farmhouse halfway sometimes acts as a hiding place for the Gendarmes, but are pretty easy to spot.If you are of a mind to potter down this section, the views across North Yorkshire are fantastic,on a clear day visibility is forever. At the end of this section is Duncombe park,a stately home whose entrance sits on a tight left hand bend that also has a junction opposite, with the usual partially sited car drivers towing caravans pulling out of it,so caution is advised.Roll down the last bit into Helmsley for the usual bragging and Bulls**t session. As with most routes these days,a better time can be had if tackled midweek,as the usual weekend warriors bring out a higher police presence. This route at only 26km approx,is a good tyre warming session for the more demanding and well documented B1257 TT route.

Hutton-Le-Hole - Castleton ( Blakey Ridge )

Yorkshire > United Kingdom > Europe
January 9, 2008 - 4 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.3

Awesome ... awesome road!

Can be used as part of a circular route taking in the Brilliant Stokesley to Helmsley Road also.

Flat out riding for 12 miles along the moor ridge ... nice exposed well-sighted corners, no trees to it and plenty of elevation change to keep you interested. I've ridden it loads of times and not once seen any police presence. There are lots of sheep knocking about but they don't mind you flying past at full revs .... always worth keeping an eye out for them wondering onto the road though!

Because it is so exposed it can get a little windy but you usually find if it's windy in one direction it's ok in the opposite direction.

Nice pub halfway along for a drink if you fancy it.

Shilling Pot : Bellingham - Kielder ( Kielder Water )

North East England > United Kingdom > Europe
March 27, 2008 - 4 star route rating Motorcycle Road3.8

Nice little ride out from Morpeth to Kielder, stop for a coffee or a nice sandwich at Chollerford and head for Kielder Water. Nice ride out, roads not too busy at weekends.

A591 : Keswick - Bothel

North West England > United Kingdom > Europe
September 27, 2007 - 4 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.0

My favourite thrash! The sweeping left hander off the Keswick roundabout gets you in the mood for what is to come. Its a great road for letting off steam, some nasty blind corners to be sure, but if you pick your time and are lucky enough to have good weather its an absolute blast. It does go past some tourist hot-spots so you have to stay alert for walkers and mountain bikers, but it is generally a genuinely enjoyable road which gets faster as you clear the fells and head towards Bothel. Enjoy!

A selection of really good corners in some great scenario. Some of the route runs alongside an old Steam Railway line which is still in use and check out the bridge over Loch Creran. Recommended.

A896 / Mountain road : Lochcarron - Applecross

Highland (Scotland) > United Kingdom > Europe
June 20, 2005 - 4 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.3

This is the highest classified road in Britian with spectacular views from the summit. From Lochcarron head west through Kishorn to the junction at Tornapress, turn left and start heading up the hill, dont take the left turn down to the old oil rig construction yard about a mile along the road. The road starts to climb from here for the next 6 miles, its all single track with some nasty blind corners but also some lovely sweepy bends.there is a good spot to stop for pics on a sweeping right hand bend above the oil rig yard with a great view over Loch Kishorn to Plockton and the Skye bridge.continue climbing up to the hairpin bends, can be tricky early in the year because of gravel and muck left on the road after the winter.Stop at the top hairpin and look back down the corrie at the view. Its about another mile to the summit with a big stopping place,if its a clear day the views are fantastic accross the inner sound to Raasay and Rona, south to Rhum and Eigg and all the way north to Lewis. From here on its down hill all the way to Applecross for 6 miles, again watch some of the corners for gravel and one nasty open left hand bend about half way down with an adverse camber which has caught out a few bikers. When you get back down to sea level you can turn left for the Applecross Inn ,good food and biker friendly, there is also a shop and prtrol station or you can go right and take the coast road round to Sheidaig to complete the loop.there are some spectacular views of the Torridon mountains, loch Torridon and loch Sheildaig. The road is quite demanding in places but well worth the efort but try to pick a clear day to take advantage of the fantastic views.

B7068 / B6357 : Kielder - Lockerbie

North East England > United Kingdom > Europe
August 7, 2006 - 3 star route rating Motorcycle Road3.5

Get yourself to Kielder, don't stop at the shops at main attractions its to expensive instead go to the small garage at the end of Castle Drive and fill up and grab a cuppa, head for Saughtree and through Castleton when you get to the village of Newcastleton halfway through the village turn right on to the old moor road, care is needed here as the road is only about 5 foot wide and single traffic with passing points on the way its about 16 Km then through Langholm on to the B7068 for 27 Km to Lockerbie, this route is more intended for the layed back rider at a steady pace, But take extra care at this bend Lat 55.16907N Long 2.92402W as it creeps up on you and if you miss it there is a drop over the top about 150 foot to the bottom (ouch) scenery is excellent on a good clear day.

D211 : Le Bourg-D'Oisans - L'Alpe D'Huez

Rhone-Alpes (inc. Lyon) ... > France > Europe
May 4, 2006 - 4 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.5

From Le Bourg-D'Oisans take the D211 to L'Alpe D'Huez, this road is 14kms long, has 21 hairpin bends and rises 1100 metres up the side of a mountain. As it's a special section of the Tour de France the road surface is kept in tip top condition. If you can take your eyes off the road for long enough the views are pretty spectacular.

A87 : Invergarry - Kyle of Lochalsh

Highland (Scotland) > United Kingdom > Europe
January 20, 2005 - 5 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.8

Fantastic ride into the Highlands that really shows the best side of biking in Scotland. A great selection of corners, brilliant landscape and some wonderful nature. There can be some animals near the road, but visibility is mostly very open, so they pose little threat. There was no Police presence at all when I was last there, but this may have changed as I saw this road mentioned in a major UK motorbike magazine article recently.

A894 : Inchnadamph - Scourie - Laxford Bridge

Highland (Scotland) > United Kingdom > Europe
March 18, 2007 - 4 star route rating Motorcycle Road4.3

A stunning road that is very open and little traffic if you go before the second week in July before the tourists arrive in numbers.
It has it all, very fast open stretches with sections that has corner after corner that you can see through, there are one or two that will catch you out so beware.
The road is that blinding that you need to go back and do it again to take in the scenery at a more sedate pace.

A167 : Skipton on Swale - Northallerton

Yorkshire > United Kingdom > Europe
April 19, 2006 - 3 star route rating Motorcycle Road3.5

Open roads and twisty bends, some great riding. A couple of small villages in between to slow you down, other than that its throttle, throttle, throttle. Newby Wisk, the North Yorkshire Police HQ is off this road so take a little more care nearer Northallerton, but i've not seen any police yet.

D218B / D925 / Cormet de Roseland / Route des Montagnes / D902 : Flumet - Bourg St. Maurice

Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Az... > France > Europe
January 29, 2007 - 5 star route rating Motorcycle Road5.0

Road starts form Flumet up to the Alps, through some small villages with a great view of Chamonix valley. Open and nice curves lead you to the lake of Roseland and then climps up to Cormet de Roseland (~2000m). The way down to Bourg St. Maurice must not be missed. One of the best scenery roads I have every ridden. Great view and lots of closed curves.
