Great day trip that takes in two valleys by way of the Kaslo to New Denver Pass. Starting up Hwy 3A take the Kootenay Lake Ferry from Kootenay Bay to Balfour. Once across the lake travel north on Hwy 31 to Kaslo. Head west on Hwy 31A to New Denver that is situated on the east shore of Slocan Lake. Follow Hwy 6 south along the lake. Once south of the lake, the road somewhat parallels the Slocan River through the Slocan Valley. The impressive Valhalla Mountain Range to the west are visible until you reach the junction of Hwy 6 and Hwy 3A. Turn north on 3A and within about 20 minutes enter Nelson. Head up along the north shore of the west arm of Kootenay Lake back to Balfour and take the Ferry back over to Kooteany Bay. Travel toward the south end of the east shore of Kootenay Lake where the route begins (about 50 km). Lots of lush vegetation, interesting geological formations, glaciers and wildlife to see.
