US 64 : Tres Piedras - Tierra Amarilla (United States)October 15, 2007Just returned from a four-wheel review of this route, and we hit the spectacular fall foliage. If you enjoy scenery, shoot for the first week of October...at more than 9000 feet above sea level, the leaves peaked in color, mostly the shimmery gold of the aspens waving in the breeze. We met a flock of 500 sheep being herded up the road to winter pasture...leaving an unusual road hazard. The best scenes are from the middle of the route to the western terminus at Route 84. The ride up from 84 up 285 is mostly nauseating, straight boring and not much to see except the back of the RV in front of you. I recommend that one make the ride over from Taos instead. 70 : Hondo - Ruidoso ( Part of The Billy the Kid Trail ) (United States)September 24, 2007In the middle of the southern New Mexico desert rises the Sierra Blanca mountain range. This is the shortest distance between Texas and skiing. The Billy the Kid Trail is a lopsided trianglular route described by US 70 in the southern leg, US 380 in the eastern leg, and NM 48 in the west. Featured places are Ruidoso and Capitan where Texans haul their monster trailers for a break from the endless flatlands. In September, there is a huge rally of the unofficial New Mexico State Vehicle, the Harley Davidson, called the Golden Aspen Motorcycle Rally. When the leaves change the scenery is particularly striking. The map does not show the trip well, but you can start and finish anywhere on the loop, Capitan, Hondo, Ruidoso. Watch out for traffic on holiday weekends, but the scenerys worth the ride. I know youre wondering how youre going to make this ride. Rent a bike, I guess, or join the military and get stationed here. I used to abuse my footpegs about once a week on this infinite hairpin. If you have to have more than two wheels, get a convertible. To get there, turn from Auwiolima St onto Tantalus Drive. As you climb up out of the residential area, you suddenly find yourself in the rainforest and the fragrance makes you believe that there must be more oxygen in the area. At the top, you break out into a causeway were you can see Honolulu to your right and the western end of Oahu on your left. Best ridden at sunset for the most spectacular views. At some vague point, the road turns into Little Round Top Dr, and winds down through bamboo forest abak into the city. this is not a road to be taken in a hurry, and kids and cars will jump out at you at eiher end of the journey. Enjoy! NM 48 : Capitan - Ruidoso ( Part of The Billy the Kid Trail ) (United States)September 23, 2007In the middle of the southern New Mexico desert rises the Sierra Blanca mountain range.
