D2205 : Saint-Sauveur-sur-Tinee - Isola ( Gorges de Valabres ) (France)October 21, 2011This road is spectacular. It starts by the river, and runs along side it, gradually climbing until you are way above the rive, which is hundreds of meters below you in the most spectacular gorge made from red rock. The views are not for the faint hearted, as one error and you are dead!! But for pure rural joy with magnificent scenery, this one is hard to beat. When I did it I got stuck in a traffic jam.......of sheep and goats!! About 2000 of them, being marched to market by shepherds. We waited at least 10 minutes as they flocked past us in their hundreds, their bells ringing in our ears. Truly wonderful D97 : Isola (France)October 21, 2011This is a gem of a road if you like mountain passes with spectacular views. I've started the route high up at the Isola 2000 ski resort, but the best way is to start about 40 miles before this on the D2205 at Saint Saveur sur Tinee. However, this is about the D97, which winds its way all the way up the mountain to the very top, at the border with Italy, on the Col de la Lombarde at 2350m above sea level. If you like getting dizzy on hair pins, then you'll love this. When I did it, it was deserted other than a mad cyclist who had ridden to the top. If you want an even better time, just carry on over into Italy, for more of the same. A896 : Annat - Incheril (United Kingdom)June 8, 2011Mostly single track, but in a magnificent backdrop of fabulous mountains. Its a slow road, as single track and a few sheep about, but take it easy and admire the scenery. Very few other cars. Lovely little tea shop at kinlochewe, the whistle stop cafe I think. They let me dry out my soaking kit by the fire whilst I warmed up on tea cakes and hot chocolate! Great way to get to Applecross B709 : Dewar - Langholm (United Kingdom)June 8, 2011If you like undulating, roller-coaster relaxed rides, then this is for you. Probably not the best for a sports bike speed merchant, but for a supermoto, or a tourer, this is fabulous. It starts in a very hilly area, and its ALL single track with passing spaces only. There are lots of sheep and cattle about, so watch out, but take it slowly and marvel at the scenery. As the road goes further south, the pace can quicken, and the final stretch between Ettrick and Langolm is a real blast. Its fast and fun, but do watch out for the massive logging trucks that suddenly appear out of nowhere; they will not stop for you.Remember its single track!! I had a fantastic afternoon just relaxing on this road, soaking up the views, and enjoying the isolation that it provides. Not the best place to break down, as no signal and very few cars, but if you like that, you will love the B709. I cannot wait to get back and ride it again. Kyle Of Lochalsh - New Kelso - Applecross - Fearnmore - Balgy (United Kingdom)May 26, 2011Fantastic road if you want a slow meander through fantastic scenery. As mentioned above, probably not the best for speed merchants on sports bikes, but if you like a laid back ride with hundreds of relaxed corners, then its superb. Its very, very remote. No phone signal for miles, but if you like feeling at one with nature, and being completely isolated, its fabulous. I can't wait to ride it again. |
