Nockalmstrasse Ring 1 (Austria)October 25, 2011The Nockalmstrasse is a road built for the pleasure of riding and adding the wondeful B99 into the circuit is icing on the cake! Maltatal ( Gmund - Malta ) (Austria)February 2, 2011My local road, I live in the village of Malta, so I can ride it often. Once past the toll both the road quickly gets interesting. There is along one way section controlled by traffic lights. There is a time display showing the waiting time, don't panic if it says 22 mins.it tends to jump down to 8 so keep an eye on the display. Watch out for works traffic and cyclists, both of these don't think the lights apply to them! Lots of waterfalls along the route so places to stop and relax abound. The dam at the top is spectacular you can take a tour or just sit and stare. First Sunday in July every year sees around 1,000 bikes at the dam for the "Bike Blessing" Like most things in this area it follows a pattern. Everyone gathers, the priest says a few words, the band plays- then everyone goes and gets pissed! Leave early before they attempt to ride back down the valley. Call in and say hello as you pass through Malta. Nockalmstrasse (Austria)February 1, 2011One of the best biking roads anywhere! I ride it dozens of times a year. It's a toll road, owned by the same company as the Grossglockner and usually opens at the same time, In 2010 it opened 9am 1st May,I went through the toll at 9.02am, still snow at the side of the road but the surface was dry. The Nockalm is popular with classic car & bike groups as it is not too steep and the hairpins are not too sharp. Lots to see along the route, you could spend a whole day. Toll last year was 8 Euros, a bargain, I get a season ticket (covers most of the toll roads here) and ride it whenever I can. It feels different in each direction so ride both ways! B107 : Bruck An Der Grossglocknerstrasse - Winklern ( Großglockner Hochalpenstraße / Hochtor ) (Austria)January 31, 2011I'm lucky enough to get to ride it several times a year, and not to have to pay the toll! It's a "must do" ride, if you go in July/August get up early and do it before the rush. And watch out for the cyclists, they go very fast downhill. Check the weather forecasts first as you can get snow at any time of the year. The road can also be closed for special events, check the website-the German version-they don't often bother to put the closure notices on the English version! Not much to add about the road itself except that every motorcyclist should ride it at least once. |
