D1508 : Annecy - Ugine (France)June 28, 2011I really don't rate this road, having ridden it a few time. It's flat and well surfaced, but built up for most of the route. Not much in the way of bends. A75 : Vialle-Chalet - Azinières (France)January 27, 2011I did the stretch north from Clermont l'Herault to Millau. It's brilliant. At one stage I could see cars very high on the mountain then was amazed when I realised it was the same road. Once on that high ground it becomes relatively normal, but that's the price to pay to cross the Viaduc de Millau, which I found breathtaking. D118 : Axat - Mont Louis ( Col de Quillane / Gorges of St Georges ) (France)January 24, 2011I did this road last summer (2010) from South to North. It starts off OK, but when you start to lose altitude just past Puyvalador it becomes nightmarish. It's very steep, the road very narrow, the surface bumpy with patches of tar melting all over the place. To add to the fun you'll find lumps of rock lying in the road too. Once in the valley it doesn't improve much, though at least there's no weight on your wrists. The Gorges St Georges is stunningly beautiful, but it's not my favourite road. Can you guess? SS38 : Bormio - Prato Allo Stelvio ( Passo Stelvio / Stilfser Joch) (Italy)July 11, 2010I only managed the east side when I visited. It is bloody hard work with plenty of traffic of all descriptions, so beware, especially of Danish BMW riders coming round one of the 48 hairpins on the wrong side. (Caused me to drop my bike.) It may be hard but it's spectacular, challenging, rewarding and utterly brilliant. DO IT! D907 : Mende - Millau ( Gorge du Tarn ) (France)July 2, 2010This stretch is a proper challenge. It is tight, narrow and often badly surfaced, with some gravel and plenty of tar patches to melt under your tyres. But it is a road from heaven. The scenery is jaw-dropping and it does open out a bit in places allowing some higher speeds. Go there. |
